Motor carriers must perform a periodic (annual) inspection on each of their commercial motor vehicles, and each vehicle must carry proof of that inspection. To help create uniformity, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) has developed National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 11, Maintenance and Periodic Inspection Standards. Part B covers the periodic inspection requirements. This standard is adopted by reference in the majority of the Canadian jurisdictions.
Scope
Motor carriers with commercial vehicles are required to comply with the periodic inspection standards in NSC Standard 11, Part B, as well as the Canadian jurisdiction requirements of the jurisdiction in which the carrier licenses vehicles.
A number of jurisdictions may exempt or include specific types of vehicles from the requirement of the periodic inspections.
