If a carrier’s vehicles are already registered under IRP and IFTA, all that is needed for IFTA is to display a IFTA license/decals and track the mileage and fuel used while in Canada. For IRP under Full Reciprocity, carriers and acceptable drivers are able to operate in all provinces. If a carrier does not have IRP, trip permits would be required.
If operating in Alberta, Manitoba, Nunavut, Ontario, Saskatchewan, or Yukon, registration for the federal fuel charge program is necessary. It’s another tax that would be filed quarterly directly with Canada Revenue Agency (an IFTA return is used to help with filing).
