Would you include this in your company handbook?

Would you include the following information in your company handbook?

  1. A timeline of your company’s history, mission, and vision statements.
  2. An at-will statement indicating that nothing in the handbook should be considered above the at-will relationship, and that the handbook is not an employment contract; it may be changed from time to time.
  3. A section describing the first few months of employment as a “probationary period.” Employers commonly tell employees a person can be fired at any time during this period. However, once this period ends, the employee may assume to be “permanent.”

Would you include this in your company handbook?: Answers

  1. Yes. The more employees know about your company, the more employees will admire it and work to keep it respectable and profitable.
  2. Yes. The terms of your handbook should not offer or guarantee continued employment. Employment is at will. The company or the employees may terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason.
  3. No. Employers want to avoid any implication that the at-will status ends after the first few months.
