Walking-Working Surfaces rule
Would this pass inspection?
While backing up, a forklift operator bumps his truck into a metal stairway, causing a minor dent. The operator reports the incident to his supervisor, but after looking at the stairway, they decide it should still be safe to use.
They aren’t certain if the stairway needs repair, and if it does, the work would likely be extensive. Preventing others from using the stairway would inhibit productivity.
Question: Would OSHA understand? What do you think?

Walking-Working Surfaces rule: Answer
Answer: No. OSHA requires that damage to a walking-working surface be corrected before employees are allowed to use that surface. If the repair cannot be made immediately, the hazard must be guarded to prevent employees from using the surface. When the repair involves the structural integrity of the surface, a qualified person must perform or supervise the correction.
