Definition of limited quantitySmall amounts of hazardous materials in non-bulk packages; the maximum amount of a hazardous material for which there is a specific labeling or packaging exception.
Limited quantity exception can be used only if Column 8A of the Hazardous Materials Table references the section with the exception in Part 173.		A quantity of dangerous goods, other than explosives, is a limited quantity if:
  • The dangerous goods are in one or more means of containment designed, constructed, filled, closed, secured and maintained so that under normal conditions of transport, including handling, there will be no accidental release of the dangerous goods that could endanger public safety; and
  • The maximum weights and volume requirements for the material are met.
Except for Class 1 and 7, each combination package may not exceed 66 pounds (30 kg) gross weight.
The size of inner packagings that are allowed to be used varies depending on the hazard/division and packing group of the material (for example, Class 8 materials in packing group III must be in inner packagings not over 1.3 gallons (5 L) for liquids or not over 11 pounds (5 kg) for solids, packed in a strong outer packaging).
Limited quantity packaging must conform to the specifications, quantity and weight limits specified for each hazard class/division and packing group. These specifications will be listed in the section in Part 173 (listed in Column 8A of the Hazardous Materials Table) that is applicable to the material 		Each outer means of containment has a gross mass that is less than or equal to 30 kg (66 lb) and the dangerous goods in the inner means of containment:
  • If solids, have a mass that is less than or equal to the number shown in column 6(a) of Schedule 1, when that number is expressed in kilograms,
  • If liquids, have a volume that is less than or equal to the number shown in column 6(a) of Schedule 1, when that number is expressed in litres, or
  • If gases, including a gas in a liquefied form, are contained in one or more means of containment each of which has a capacity less than or equal to the number shown in column 6(a) of Schedule 1, when that number is expressed in litres.
Shipping papersIn most situations shipping papers are not required for a limited quantity of hazardous material. However, shipping papers are required for a limited quantity of a hazardous material that is a hazardous substance, hazardous waste, marine pollutant, or is offered/transported by air or water. When a shipping paper is required the words “Limited Quantity” or the abbreviation “Ltd Qty” must follow the basic description for the hazardous material. 1

2 When a limited quantity of dangerous goods is in a means of containment that is inside an overpack, the following information must be displayed on the overpack unless the marks on the small means of containment are visible through the overpack:
  • The word “Overpack” or “Suremballage”; and
  • The limited quantity marking legibly and visibly marked on a contrasting background.
