Question: Do the following scenarios meet the requirements for personal protective equipment?
- Scenario 1: Mary works as a marine biologist. After spending two days on a research project, Mary disinfects her scuba mask so it may be used by another employee.
- Scenario 2: As part of the required work uniform, a dental clinic requires employees to buy the disposable gloves they prefer and bring them to work.
- Scenario 3: Since summer temps often surpass one hundred degrees, a warehouse company has made safety shoes or boots optional to better retain employees during its busiest time.

Tricky situations for PPE: Answers
- Scenario 1: Yes. Personal protective equipment which has been previously used should be disinfected before being issued to another employee. Even when each employee is assigned protective equipment for extended periods, it is recommended that such equipment be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
- Scenario 2: No. Employers must provide hand protection (except ordinary everyday gloves to protect from weather) to workers at no cost.
- Scenario 3: No. Safety shoes or boots with impact protection are required for carrying or handling materials such as packages, objects, parts, or heavy tools which could be dropped, and for other activities where objects might fall onto the feet.
