Stairways
['Walking Working Surfaces']

- Stairways must meet OSHA requirements and must be inspected and maintained regularly.
The Stairway standard at 1910.25 establishes requirements for the design, installation, and inspection of stairways. The standard applies to stairways in general industry including: standard, spiral, ship, and alternating tread-type stairs.
The standard does not apply to stairs serving floating roof tanks or designed into machines or equipment. The regulation also does not apply to stairs on scaffolds or self-propelled motorized equipment.
Employers must:
- Equip all stairways having at least 3 treads and at least 4 risers with stair rail systems and handrails.
- Ensure stairs have uniform riser heights and tread depths between landings.
- Provide proper landing platforms where required.
- Inspect all stairways regularly and as necessary.
- Maintain stairways in a safe condition.
