How to use the segregation table
The segregation table specifies the restrictions on loading, transporting and storing hazardous materials when offered for or transported by highway.
For highway transportation of hazardous materials, the segregation requirements apply to materials that are in:
- Packages that must be labeled under Part 172,
- A compartment of a multi-compartmented cargo tank subject to 173.33, or
- Portable tanks loaded in a transport vehicle or freight container.

To use the Segregation table:
1. Locate the hazard classes or divisions of the materials in question – one in the vertical column, the other in the horizontal row.
2. Follow each to the location where the intersect.
3. The codes at the intersection are defined as follows:
| Code | Meaning |
| Blank | There are no restrictions. The materials may be loaded or stored together. |
| X | The materials may not be loaded, transported, or stored together. |
| O | The materials may not be loaded, transported, or stored together unless separated in a manner that – in the event of leakage – there would be no comingling of the materials under circumstances normal to transportation. |
| * | The segregation of Class 1 (explosive) materials is governed by the Compatibility Table for Class 1 (explosive) materials in 177.848(f). |
| A | Not withstanding the “X,” ammonium nitrate (UN1942) and ammonium nitrate fertilizer may be loaded or stored with Division 1.1 or 1.5 materials. |
Scenario 1, blank entry
- Carrier has a shipment of Flammable gases, 2.1 on the trailer.
- Carrier is picking up a shipment of Flammable solids, 4.1.
- The intersecting box is blank, meaning there are no restrictions.

Scenario 2, X designation
- Carrier has a shipment of Flammable liquids, 3 on the trailer.
- Carrier is picking up a shipment of 2.3 Gas, Zone A.
- The intersecting box has an “X”, meaning that the two shipments may not be loaded or transported together on the same trailer.

Scenario 3, O designation
- Carrier has a shipment of Flammable liquids, 3 on the trailer.
- Carrier is picking up a shipment of Oxidizers, 5.1.
- The intersecting box has an “O”, meaning that the two shipments may be loaded or transported together on the same trailer if they are separated.
