Does this predict future crashes?

Scenario: Your driver is involved in a second recordable crash in the person’s 15-year tenure with your company. Recordable crashes are those that result in one or more:

  • Fatalities,
  • Injuries requiring immediate medical treatment away from the scene, or
  • Vehicles being towed from the scene.

While this crash wasn’t your driver’s fault, a report is sent by the state to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Does this predict future crashes?: Answer

Answer: Yes. All crashes affect a carrier or driver’s score in the Crash Indicator Behavior Analysis and Safety Category (BASIC).

If the crash falls within one of the nonpreventable scenarios, the carrier would have to use DataQs to request that the accident not be used in the Crash Indicator BASIC calculations.

Data shows that motor carriers involved in crashes, regardless of the motor carrier’s role, are more likely to be involved in more future crashes than carriers who are not. FMCSA intervention is based on recordable crashes without consideration of the motor carrier’s role.
