Do I need a trip permit in this scenario?

This quiz will test your knowledge of trip permitting requirements for interstate travel. Click below to see answers.

  1. You plan on operating your vehicle in a state outside of the jurisdiction of your permanent permit. Is it okay to purchase your trip permit from the state you’re traveling to once you arrive there?
    1. Yes. As long as you obtain a trip permit once you enter the state you can legally travel.
    2. No. A trip permit must be purchased before the travel takes place.
  2. One of the vehicles in your fleet is not registered under the IRP and needs to operate outside of the jurisdiction of your permanent permit. Must the vehicle obtain a trip permit?
    1. Yes. Any qualified commercial motor vehicle that is traveling interstate and isn’t registered under the IRP must obtain a trip permit.
    2. No. Since other vehicles in the fleet are registered under the IRP a trip permit is not required.
  3. You operate a vehicle with restricted license plates. Is it okay to travel out of state without obtaining a trip permit?
    1. Yes. Restricted plates are valid for interstate travel as long as the restrictions are met.
    2. No. Restricted plates are only valid for travel in the state of issue and a trip permit may be required when traveling in other jurisdictions.
  4. You obtain a trip permit for interstate travel in June. In July, you prepare to repeat the same interstate trip. Must you obtain a second trip permit for the July interstate travel?
    1. Yes. Trip permits are only valid for one trip and a new permit must be obtained for each additional trip.
    2. No. Trip permits are valid for additional trips if those trips are to the same location where the original permit was issued.
  5. You operate an interstate truck with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds and therefore opted not to proportionally register the vehicle under the IRP. Is a trip permit required for traveling outside of the jurisdiction?
    1. Yes. Automatic reciprocity is not granted and depending upon the jurisdictions of travel a trip permit may be required for interstate or intrastate travel.
    2. No. Since your vehicle is under the required weight for the registry requirements of an IRP, a trip permit is not required for interstate or intrastate travel.
