Complying with OSHA’s sanitation requirements

Scenario: A group of employees have requested water be made available to them in their work area. There is a cafeteria in close proximity that has water available to employees.

Question: Is the employer required to provide water in individual work areas?

Click below to see answer.

Complying with OSHA’s sanitation requirements: Answer

Answer: No. Since water is provided in close proximity, OSHA’s requirement to provide potable water has been fulfilled.

OSHA requires potable drinking water be provided in all places of employment under 1910.141(b). The agency does not specify where the potable water must be provided in relation to work areas. NOTE: If an employee opts to provide additional sources of potable water, OSHA has specific requirements outlined in 1910.141(b)(1(iii) that should be reviewed and followed.
