Answer: No. To operate a fuel truck, the driver must possess both a hazardous materials (H) endorsement and a tank (N) endorsement. To obtain the hazardous materials endorsement, the driver will need to successfully complete ELDT, provided by a school or entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Training Provider Registry (TPR) and pass a hazardous materials knowledge test (administered by the driver’s state driver licensing agency). The driver is also subject to a background check and fingerprinting prior to receiving the endorsement.

Answer No. To upgrade from a Class B CDL to a Class A CDL, the driver is subject to both ELDT theory and behind-the-wheel (range and road) instruction. This instruction must be provided by a school or entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Training Provider Registry (TPR). Upon successful completion of ELDT, the driver may schedule a Class A CDL skills test.
