Alaska has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations, with some modifications.
Part 391 applies to a self-propelled or towed vehicle that has a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 14,000 pounds or more, or is used to transport hazardous materials.
18-years old for an intrastate driver hauling nonhazardous materials.
21-years old for all interstate drivers and intrastate drivers transporting hazardous materials for which a placard is required.
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
All drivers must hold a valid operator’s license, either from Alaska or from their home state. The license classification system is as follows:
Class | Description |
---|---|
A/CDL | Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of greater than 26,000 pounds provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle(s) being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. |
B/CDL | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of greater than 26,000 pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds. |
C/CDL | Any combination of vehicles where the towing vehicle is 26,000 pounds or less GVWR and the towed vehicle has a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less, but together they have a GCWR of more than 26,000 pounds. |
— Any vehicle or combination not described above that is either designed to transport more than 15 passengers including the driver or is used in the transportation of hazardous materials requiring placards. | |
D | Non-commercial vehicles. |
Endorsements | |
T | Double or triple trailers. |
N | Tank vehicle. |
P | Any vehicle designed to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver. |
H | Any vehicle used to transport hazardous materials in placardable amounts. |
