Sales & use taxes
Montana does not impose a general sales and use tax within the state. Montana charges a vehicle rental sales tax of 4 percent.
Businesses that rent vehicles for less than 30 days and without a driver must charge the sales tax on vehicles that transport 15 or fewer passengers and that are rented as part of an insurance or warranty contract.
New vehicles are subject to a sales tax imposed by local counties of up to 0.7% of the retail value of the vehicle. The tax is paid at the time of application for the title and original license. The country treasurer collects the tax. Trailers and semitrailers are exempt.
